Government Cuts Ahead Of Health And Safety Review Bite Into HSE

"Health and Safety at work is under sustained attack by the Coalition Government. The CWU, TUC, other Unions and Safety Campaign groups will do their utmost to ensure the review team listens to the voice of those affected by the UK's health and safety regime."

So ends letter to branches, LTB414/11, issued Tuesday 26th April - two days before the forthcoming Workers Memorial Day 2011 which is held every year on 28th April.

The coincidence of the two occurring in the same week, is not lost on the CWU Health and Safety department who have also issued a CWU WMD 2011 poster this week.

In his letter to all CWU branches, Dave Joyce, National Health, Safety & Environment Officer provides a thorough analysis of the forthcoming review of health and safety legislation and practice by the government, headed by Professor Ragnar Lofstedt. Dave's LTB is based on his article, published on this website earlier this week and adds further information with regard to the effects already being felt by the HSE, as a result of the Tory's wish to decimate health and safety legislation.

The LTB explains:

'As a result of these major financial cuts the HSE have subsequently announced an annual cut of 11,000 Health and Safety Workplace Inspections, representing a third of all the Inspections carried out. Local Authorities, also suffering major financial cuts have indicated a further 65,000 Safety Inspections carried out by their EHO Inspectors will be cut.'
