Starmer Promises Labour Party Conference A Hillsborough Law By April 2025
On the banks of the River Mersey, at this week's Labour Party Conference, the Prime Minister used his address to the conference to promise that by April of next year; his government will bringin a new law based on that which Andy Burnham presented in 1997. during the first term of the Blair government.
Carl Webb, CWU's North West Regional Secretary, posted on the Union's NW Regional H&S Forum Whats App group; this communicartion from the campaign group fighting for such a law to ensure the accountability of public authorities, on behalf of the Hillsborough Families to ensure the failings of public authorities they endured following the Hillsborough disaster; will not happen again:
Statement From The Hillsborough Law Now Campaign
“We and all the families are delighted to hear the renewed commitment from the Prime Minister that a Hillsborough Law will be brought in by next April. However, there remains a lot of work to do to ensure a Hillsborough Law loses none of the effectiveness of the original bill (Public Authority (Accountability) Bill)
first presented by Andy Burnham in 1997.
The HLN campaign has grown significantly and is now a coalition of families bereaved by state failures who will not give up until they see the right act on the statute book.
The campaign stands ready to assist the government in making this law a reality.”
