Union Concern Over BT No-Smoking Policy

The CWU has expressed concerns about the practicalities of managing what is in effect 'cold-turkey' for individuals who are addicted to, or have an habitual use of, nicotine; as a result of the total ban of smoking on BT premises. The subsequent mandatory closure of smoking rooms will create for many a very difficult situation.

Whilst the Union and it's Branches have been happy to endorse the Company's policy, and indeed many in the NW supported campaigns pressurising the Government to bring in a total ban on smoking at work; the union has nevertheless emphasised repeatedly it's concerns with regard to the BT policy and it's implementation.

BT's response has been to state that it intends to be ' pragmatic and sensitive' to individuals.

Writing to all Branches this weekend, Simon Sapper, National Officer, has made it clear that the Union intends to keep BT to that promise and urges Branches to contact him with any subsequent concerns as soon as they become evident.

"The company has given a commitment to pragmatism and sensitivity. We hope and expect that this commitment will be enacted. However, should branches have any concerns it would be appreciated if these could be escalated to Head Office at the earliest opportunity."
