Under European and UK law, temporary workers should have the same level of health and safety protection as other workers, and in an endevour to determine the current situation in the UK; the Labour Research Department has been asked to research the health and safety of temporary workers for the European Commission. They are looking for examples of good practice, where temporary workers do get protection, but also want to know where temporary workers are not being protected. The research is being conducted by LRD researcher Paul Hampton, who is writing a report for the European Commission on the health and safety of temporary workers and asked the CWU for assistance in his research. The European Union passed a Directive (known as 91/383), to ensure that temporary and agency workers received equal protection at work.
