New Fire Regulations In Force

A major overhaul of fire safety legislation comes into forcethis week, with the implementation of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRO).

The responsibility for fire safety will now lie with employers, self-employed business owners with premises, voluntary organisations, those responsible for buildings with public access and any contractor who exercises a degree of control over any premises.

These 'responsible persons' will have a duty to ensure the safety of everyone who uses their premises and those in the immediate vicinity who may be at risk if there is a fire.

Fire certificates will be abolished and will cease to have legal status.

The new legislation was delayed from its original implementation date in April.
