CWU Branch Issues Mobile Phone Warning

Merseyside & South West Lancashire Branch have written to all it's members to warn them and remind them of forthcoming further penalties for those caught driving whilst using their mobile phones.

They have also produced their own labels for members to stick on their work areas, or in their cars and vans, as a reminder.

The circular, from Derek Maylor Branch USR Co-ordinator, is reproduced below:

Colleagues,

re: New mobile phone use while driving penalties in the UK

New legislation in the UK means that from 27 February 2007 , drivers caught using a hand-held mobile phone while driving will get a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence .

Research by the Transport Research Laboratory in the UK shows that, as well as holding the phone, the conversation distracts the driver. Research has, as we knew it would, found that any mobile phone use at the wheel, whether hand-held or hands-free, means drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a crash.

Our advice continues to be consistent - switch it off, or at least do not answer any calls. Make calls before you start your journey.
Pull over in a safe place to use the mobile. Take regular breaks to deal with calls and messages.

Enclosed are stickers which are for distribution for colleagues to stick on the dashboard as a reminder. They can be left around exchanges, mess rooms, TEC’s etc.

Yours sincerely,

Derek Maylor.
