Joint BT/BT Unions Campaign

European Health & Safety
Week

CWU LTB824/07 announces that both BT and the BT Unions will be running a joint campaign this year:

" This year’s European Week for Safety and Health at Work campaign - ‘Lighten the Load’ will focus on musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and will run from 22nd – 26th October 2007.
The aim of the BT/BT Unions joint campaign is to support employers, workers, safety representatives and other stakeholders in improving MSD prevention.

MSDs are the most common form of ill-health disorders at work, both in the UK and across Europe. Work-related MSDs affect 1.0 million people in Great Britain alone each year. Problems include:

  • Back pain
  • Work-related neck and upper limb disorders (ULDs)
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Lower limb disorders

Particular emphasis should be given to raising awareness of prevention and management which are key factors in reducing MSDs, along with the implementation of reasonable changes / adjustments for employees with medical restrictions or pre-existing conditions.

As in previous years there will be a joint approach with BT working with Union Safety Representatives from the CWU and Connect. Regional CWU Health and Safety Co-ord Secretaries, Branch Safety Co-ordinators and USRs should take the initiative in organising local site events before, during and after the week, liaising with local management.

Openreach and BT Operate are going to publish a briefing at the start of October and Regional Safety Champions are being made aware of this joint initiative and posters and briefing materials will be made available by management.
