Asbestos Information Card Re-issued In BT

Thousands of people in Great Britain die each year from mesothelioma and asbestos related lung cancer as a result of past exposure to asbestos. Many thousands of tons of asbestos are in place in some buildings.  The danger to you comes from drilling, cutting, sanding or disturbing materials made from asbestos and breathing in the dust. Asbestos related diseases do not usually become apparent until between 10 to 60 years after breathing in Asbestos dust.

Dave Joyce, CWU National Health, Safety & Environment Officer has written to all CWU Branches (LTB182/08) to advise that an Asbestos information card, first issued in October 2004 to coincide with European Health & Safety week, has been updated jointly between the CWU and BT Managers and is being sent out to all BT employees along with their copy of BT Today in March 2008.

The business sized information card can be removed from inside the A5 folded card and kept for future reference in wallets or purses for example.

It provides information on the many areas where people may encounter asbestos and what action they must take to remove the possibility of exposure.  The card points out that  whether it is working on BT or customer premises or even in your own homes, extreme caution should be taken when any substances suspected of being an Asbestos containing material is encountered.

The BT Unions London Health & Safety Committee were very much involved in producing the Asbestos Card, which is a major contribution to the Health and Safety of CWU members in BT.
