CWU Shortlisted For Major Health And Safety Awards

The CWU has been shortlisted in two categories for the 2008 SHP IOSH Health and Safety Awards when the announcement was made this week.

The annual major health and safety awards organised by Safety and Health Practitioner (SHP) Magazine and the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be presented in Oct ober, in London.

When announcing the shortlists this week SHP and IOSH said there had been hundreds of entries flooding in for consideration in the 13 categories available. It's quite an achievement therefore for CWU to be shortlisted in two categories (Health and Safety Campaign of the Year) and (Health and Safety Partnership of the Year).

The Health and Safety Campaign of the Year category is open to all organisations and individuals who have run a successful health and safety awareness campaign that has made a tangible difference either in the workplace, or other areas affected by the entrant's work activities. The Health and Safety Partnership of the Year category is open to joint projects/campaigns/achievements between two or more organisations that have been successful in raising health and safety awareness and standards in the workplaces involved, or other areas affected by the partners' activities.

The CWU Health, Safety and Environment Department has run a number of high profile campaigns as well as joint partnership campaigns with Royal Mail and BT and worked with a number of health charities such as the Men's Health Forum (MHF) Stroke Association, Cancer Back-Up, Cancer Research UK, Breast Cancer Care etc.

The Workfit (5) Joint Cancer Campaign in 2007 drew the organisers attention after the CWU, Connect and BT worked in partnership on a major campaign on Cancer awareness, "Cancer and you campaign" with the support of the Cancer charity Cancerbackup, one of the UK's leading cancer information charities. Particular credit goes to members of the T&FSE Health, Safety and Environment Committee and BT CWU Union Safety Reps who promoted and participated in this campaign.

The Awards were launched to give organisations and individuals the chance to have their efforts to promote good health and safety practice recognised and the categories cover industry-specific achievements, and activity-related endeavors in the field.

The shortlisted entries will now be judged to select the winners by a panel of experts from the UK health and safety world, including: IOSH president, Ray Hurst; head of health and safety for the Olympic Delivery Authority, Lawrence Waterman; NEBOSH chief executive, Teresa Budworth, former HSE director-general, David Eves; Hugh Robertson, senior policy officer at the TUC; and head of research and technical services at IOSH, Dr Luise Vassie.

The winners are not revealed until the envelope is opened on the night of the presentation ceremony on 8 October in London.
