CWU Support Diabetes Awareness Campaigns

The CWU are supporting campaigns to help members and their families become aware of the dangers of Diabetes. Attached to this LTB are examples of the campaign materials available from Diabetes UK.

There are currently an estimated 750,000 people in the UK who have diabetes, but don't know it yet.
Diabetes is serious. If left untreated it can lead to blindness, kidney disease, heart attacks and other life-threatening complications. But the good news is that if you spot your diabetes early you can greatly reduce the risk of serious health damage.

Diabetes UK has launched a UK-wide advertising awareness campaign, Measure Up. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of diabetes, particularly highlighting the link between the risk of diabetes and a person's waist measurement.

Advertisements on bus shelters, railway stations and in national newspapers and consumer press have appeared across the UK.

The CWU are working in partnership with BT and Royal Mail on campaigns for employees and their families on Diabetes awareness over the coming months.

Also, please be aware of World Diabetes Day (WDD) which is a global awareness campaign. It was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the alarming rise in diabetes around the world. In 2007, the United Nations marked the Day for the first time with the passage of the United Nations World Diabetes Day Resolution in December 2006, which made the existing World Diabetes Day an official United Nations World Health Day.

World Diabetes Day is a campaign that features a new theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation each year to address issues facing the global diabetes community. While the themed campaigns last the whole year, the day itself is celebrated on November 14.
