Merseyside schools are being visited in the run up to bonfire night to explain that while watching fireworks can be fun, they are explosives and need careful handling and storage.

Fire chiefs are hoping that the kids will go home and pass the message onto their parents with ‘have a go dads’ in danger of putting their families at risk on bonfire night. Each year the highest number of firework injuries happen at family or private parties and over half of those injuries are to children. In 2005 there were 49 reported firework accidents on Merseyside.

Having fireworks at home can be great fun and fireworks are safe if used properly but it is usually adults organising home displays who inadvertently put safety at risk. The message to those in charge of displays is: “Take more responsibility with fireworks, they are more dangerous than you think and could severely injure children or yourself.”

Consumer Minister Gareth Thomas said:

“Millions of families love watching fireworks, but no-one wants to be a victim of the accidents that can and do happen. Even if you think you know how to handle fireworks, failing to follow the Firework Code properly puts you and your loved ones in danger. Each of us has a responsibility to take the right precautions with fireworks so we can all enjoy them safely this year.”

Chief Fire Officer Tony McGuirk from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said:

"We’d like to thank the Hollyoaks actors for giving their time to promote firework safety. Here on Merseyside we are determined that people enjoy their firework celebrations safely and responsibly.”
