IOSH Applaud New European Standard For H&S Professionals

The IOSH '08 edition of IOSH Today has announced a new certification standard for European health and safety professionals which will be launched later this year.

The standard is being developed by the European Network of Safety and Health Professional
Organisations (ENSHPO), the organisation IOSH co-founded and coordinates.

IOSH policy and technical director Richard Jones is vice chairman of ENSHPO. He said: “This
is a significant step forward for the health and safety profession – it will give our members the
chance to get their qualifications and experience recognised across Europe, and bring greater flexibility and employability in a huge market.”

IOSH Chartered Members will be eligible to apply to use the designation ‘EurOSHM’ (European
Occupational Safety and Health Manager).

The certification is designed to help achieve a common standard of health and safety practice
throughout Europe. The new standard, accompanied by a code of conduct, will enable employers in different countries to identify the levels of competence offered by health and safety practitioners from
across Europe.

The standard is due to be launched later this year. ENSHPO is now working to produce a Technician level European standard.
