Ladder Exchange 2008 Announced

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced that it is to launch a new Ladder Exchange campaign, starting in September 2008.

Ladder Exchange 2008 aims to highlight the risks associated with using an unsuitable ladder and provide employers with the opportunity to exchange their substandard ladders for new ones, at a discounted price.

A number of companies and the Ladder Association, formerly the British Ladder Manufacturers' Association (BLMA), are working with the HSE and local authorities on the Ladder Exchange campaign. In the new campaign, the HSE will urge anyone who uses a ladder in day-to-day work to always check the ladder before use and make sure that it is right for the job. If it is not the right ladder or if it is broken or bent, the HSE is urging ladder owners to contact an approved company, such as SGB Hire and Sale, Speedy Hire, HSS Hire or Ladderstore.com, and exchange it.

The Ladder Exchange will start in September 2008 with a large number of local authority enforcement officers checking ladders as part of their visits. Where they see a “dodgy” ladder, they may take it away.
According to the safety body, falls from height continue to be the main cause of death in the workplace and one of the main causes of serious injury. Around one third of all falls from height accidents are as a result of a fall from a ladder
