Stress Management Guidance For Managers Published

Click to downloadThe HSE has completed its second phase of a research project  to identify the specific management behaviours associated with the effective management of stress at work.

Funded by HSE, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and Investors in People UK, this phase aimed to: examine the usability of the ‘Management competencies for preventing and reducing stress at work’ framework developed in Phase One; refine and revise the framework; and design a ‘Stress management competency indicator tool’. An additional aim was to explore the commonalities between the framework and indicator tool on the one hand and the HSE Management Standards and general management measurement tools on the other.

A full report published 3rd June presents the findings of the second phase in detail and has been used as the basis for a document giving practical help for HR and line managers to tackle the issue of stress at work.

In March 2007 the CIPD produced initial guidance for HR managers and line managers including a competency framework enabling line managers to work on the skills required to reduce and prevent stress at work. With the completion of Phase 2 of the project the original guidance has now been refined and updated.

The material is presented in the format of three separate PDF documents designed to meet the needs of line managers and HR professionals.

Each document deals with separate elements and discusses such issues as
Management competencies for preventing and reducing stress at work, Line management behaviour and stress at work, and updated advice for HR managers.

The original research report is available from the HSE, with all three guidance documents being available to download from the CIPD website.
