The new strategy is designed to reduce the number of workplace accidents while taking a common sense approach to ensuring that risk management is an enabler for business, not a burden.

The HSE says its latest research indicates that both employers and workers recognise overwhelmingly that providing a safe workplace makes sound commercial sense. Nearly 90% of business leaders say that people are their company’s most important asset. In addition to preventing accidents, 65% of employees say that good health and safety practices make them feel valued.

The overall feedback HSE says it received was very supportive, and following listening to suggestions made during the consultation, changes were made to the original draft document. the new version of the strategy document was launched this 3rd June.

Launching the strategy document, HSE Chair, Judith Hackitt CBE said, " We believe this strategy represents a clear statement of core principles and a sensible approach to health and safety in Great Britain.

Whilst the economic climate is difficult and the temptation for some may be to cut corners, HSE, its partners and businesses must resolve to continue to strive to improve health and safety performance. Good health and safety is good business."

Meanwhile, CWU USRs attending its annual conference in Bournemouth this week, will be able to raise specific questions about the new strategy document direct to Judith Hackitt as she is attending the Union's health & safety fringe meeting on Tuesday lunch time.
