IOSH Appoints H&S Ethics Manager

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has appointed a new Ethical Practice Manager to help maintain standards and investigate allegations of sub-standard health and safety practice.

In a statement, IOSH announced that Simon Buckler, a law graduate, had joined the Institution in the newly created role, having previously worked for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in a similar job and as an investigation manager for the Gambling Commission.

Mr Buckler will sit on IOSH’s Professional Affairs Directorate and commented, “I’m pleased to be at IOSH and am looking forward to the challenges ahead. Health and safety is a growing profession with a bright future, and ensuring high standards of practice is key to maintaining and enhancing the reputation of the profession.”

He added, “The vast majority of IOSH members perform at the high standards expected of a professional. Unfortunately, on occasions, some members may fall below these standards, possibly with serious repercussions for those affected by their work. That damages the profession, so my role will be to investigate alleged breaches of IOSH’s code of conduct.”

IOSH’s Director of Professional Affairs, Hazel Harvey, said, “With 34,000 members worldwide and growing, it’s important for IOSH to ensure that each and every one of our members is adhering to our Code of Conduct. Poor practice damages the good name of health and safety and is something that we cannot tolerate. Simon’s role will be to help us identify and do something about those who sully the name of our profession.”
