Swine Flu Total Drastically Underestimated

Sunday's BBC News Online leading story covered the Swine Flu outbreaks. It reports that according to a leading bacteriologist, the number of swine flu cases in the UK is probably under stated and more like double the official figure.

The news item confirms that the official figure stands at 541 cases. Professor Hugh Pennington, a bacteriologist at Aberdeen University, told BBC 5 Live the real figure may be higher. "I think it would be very reasonable to say we've got at least twice as many cases as we know about," he said.

It is also reported that a baby was born to a woman in Paisley with Swine Flu on last Monday afternoon. The birth was premature at 29 weeks and she is now critically ill and her baby is in intensive care.

On Saturday, the number of people with swine flu in the UK increased to 541 after 19 more cases were confirmed in England, as well as 13 new ones in Scotland and one further case in Northern Ireland. Globally there has been 117 deaths.

Professor Pennington, told the BBC that because swine flu is similar to seasonal flu, there will be many more undeclared cases.

He said, "All the experts think that the numbers we've got are a significant underestimate. In the United States, they think for every case they know about, every confirmed case, there are 20 other cases out there in the community.

I don't think we're anywhere near that, but I think it would be very reasonable to say we've got at least twice as many cases as we know about, and it may be more than that."

Meanwhile a second case of swine flu in Wales' involves a GP from Neath Port Talbot it has been reported.
Dr Mair Williams, 66, is thought to have contracted the illness on holiday in the USA and said she is recovering from a "mild bout of flu".

Worldwide there have been 19,315 confirmed swine flu cases in 66 countries, with 117 deaths - all in Mexico and the USA.
