I joined BT 6 years ago as a Customer Service Engineer and became a Union Safety Rep 12 months later. I currently hold the position of the Health and Safety Officer within my branch.
After being employed for 11 years as an electrician in the construction industry, were health and safety was never a priority, it was a culture shock and reassuring to see that people were concerned about my welfare. I quickly gained a keen interest in all aspects of health and safety and decided to gain as much knowledge as I could by attending the CWU safety courses stages 1,2,3, which I highly recommend to all USRs.
One of the main advantages of being a USR is that you can help the CWU to promote a positive and proactive safety culture and protecting its members from fatalities, injuries, illnesses and sick absences. I believe that USRs have a key role to play and would encourage anyone interested to ring your branch office.
I recently got married on New Years Eve 2003 and spent my honeymoon in the Maldives which is where I learnt to scuba dive and passed my PADI Open Water qualification. Some of my other interest include golf and sailing, music and Jack Daniel's. I also support Manchester United and I do actually go to matches, unlike some.
