BT Openreach Fit “How’s my Driving” Stickers To Vehicles

CWU Head Office has formally been advised that BT Openreach intends to attach “How’s my Driving” stickers to all its vehicles.

A trial was held last year in South Wales; the result of which, it is claimed, showed a potential for a significant reduction in vehicle accidents.  It is commonly held, given the widespread usage of these types of labels, that the main impact is actually on the driver of the vehicle rather than the public at large.

Following the trial and after a lengthy period, the CWU was asked if it wished to participate in a working group drawing up guidelines on the stickers and reports from the public.  The Engineering Executive declined this invitation on the basis that it was not convinced that these types of stickers contribute greatly to road safety and indeed could generate malicious reports.

In the event, as stated earlier, the Union has been advised that BT Openreach will go ahead.  Technically, the CWU Executive has not agreed this initiative but it is also fair to say that we have not indicated to BT that we oppose.  At present, the Union’s stand is neutral and that we will monitor the situation to see if a genuine reduction in accidents flows from the initiative which would be welcome, or the process is open to abuse.
