BT Engineer Dies in Fatal Accident

CWU member and BT Engineer Freddy Burns had a fatal accident at work in the location of Ware in Hertfordshire in August.

This is the second death of a CWU member and BT worker to be reported in the last three months.

Writing to all CWU Branches, the CWU's H&S Dept reported that the only information to date is that it was thought that Freddy had fallen from a Pole and was found unconscious.

He was attended to by a First Aider whilst an ambulance was called and Freddy was subsequently taken by ambulance to Harlow Hospital but later died in hospital.

The local Branch is carrying out an investigation, in liaison with BT. What exactly happened to cause the death is still speculation at this stage.

The accident has been reported to the HSE by BT under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases & Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) and the Police are currently investigating the case.

Following investigations of the accident there may be recommendations as appropriate that may assist in avoiding similar accidents.

The Health, Safety and Environment Department will be making no further comment on the case until all the Police and other investigations have been completed and will remain in contact with the Branch and BT.

The Health, Safety and Environment Department wishes to record the Union's condolences to the friends, family and next of kin.
