Row Over Ryanair Safety Continues

As reported in Unionsafety last year, Ryanair continues to compromise ground crew and passenger health and safety with it's policy of refueling planes whilst passengers are seated on the planes and their 20-30 minute turn-around time.

The GMB Congress in Blackpool last week, called on the authorities to step up safety checks at Britain’s airports following reports from GMB members of increasing incidences of verbal and physical attacks on airport check-in staff at Stansted and a growing number of industrial accidents resulting from some airlines ‘turnaround time’.

Growing passenger numbers exacerbate both situations. It takes longer to get the growing number of passengers checked-in and tempers are more likely to get frayed. Airline Ryanair's policy of a reducing 'turnaround times' for planes from 30 to 25 minutes means that baggage handlers and crews have to cut corners to meet the reduced time available to them to unload, reload plans and prepare plans for departure.

The GMB is calling on the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to condemn the 20-30 minute turnaround time on the 737 series aircraft that Ryanair operate at Stansted and other aiports.

Gary Pearce, GMB Organiser at Stansted, City and Heathrow airports said, "GMB will not tolerate our members being abused at work whether by the passengers or by their employers.

The installation of safety screens between check-in staff and passengers will all but solve the problem of growing assaults on staff.

To add insult to injury, ground crew who fail to meet the reduced times run the risk of disciplinary action."
